Mumbai, 31 Jul (Commoditiescontrol):In the latest update, the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) disclosed that Canada exported a total of 48,000 metric tons (MT) of lentils in May 2023 through licensed facilities. This marked a significant decrease compared to the 106,500 MT shipped in May 2022 and the 159,600 MT exported in the preceding month.

Despite the monthly reduction, the aggregate bulk loadings for the marketing year (August-July)were reported at a substantial 1,295,300 MT, greatly exceeding the 745,900 MT of the previous season. The majority of the exported bulk is believed to be red lentils, although the CGC data does not offer a specific breakdown between red and green variants.

The season's lentil exports were segregated by quality as follows: 4% or 53,800 MT as No 1 Canada; a significant 72% or 930,500 MT as No 2 Canada; 15% or 194,500 MT as No 3 Canada; and 9% or 116,600 MT met specific specifications.

An interesting takeaway from the data is India's continued strong intake of Canadian lentils. The CGC recorded 45,400 MT of No 2 Canada lentils exported to India in May alone. Throughout the marketing year, India has imported a noteworthy 234,600 MT of No 2 Canada, 102,900 MT of No 3 Canada, and 47,000 MT of lentils by grade specification.

Other prominent destinations for lentil shipments include Bangladesh with 118,500 MT, Egypt with 33,400 MT, Mexico with 13,300 MT, Pakistan with 105,200 MT, Turkey with 491,000 MT, the UAE with 109,000 MT, and the United States with 40,500 MT.
